CHAPTER 12

My heart was in my throat, and my mouth was pasted shut. I couldn’t breathe, and looking at Arjun’s pale face made it so much worse. Being in a closed room with the goddess was like running into a structure fire without my PPE. Not that I have ever done that. It was the goddess’s power. It felt like my skin was being scraped off.

When Arjun’s heart rate dropped, I mentally kicked my ass and then pulled my head out of it—none of my feelings mattered. To save Arjun, I would do anything. Facing Artemis, my pain and panic threatened to overwhelm me again. “For the record, I started carrying the tablet so it wasn’t a magnet for demons if I wasn’t home to help my family. I created my vault but didn’t have time to add the tablet because the magic I used attracted some rogue shifter who attacked us and nearly killed my husband. All of that is because you turned me into a Relic Keeper. I’m deciding if I will ever do the job for you after I save my husband. What do I need to do?”

Artemis watched me with narrowed eyes, her impatience snapping like a whip between us. But then her energy shifted and I swear for a millisecond, it looked like there was a moment of thoughtful silence. I know it had to be a figment of my imagination.

"Nylah, you weren’t chosen to be a keeper of relics because I wanted to be a bitch. I hear your anguish and share in your concern for your husband's well-being. There’s nothing I can do about the disruption to your life. It happens when someone goes from being a mundie to a supernatural.”

That deflated a lot of my anger with her. There was no denying she was genuine. “I get that you can’t control everything. I just wish it wasn’t costing us so much money. I will be broke and homeless in a month if this shit continues. Anyway, not your concern. How do I save him?”

“The Stone of Transmutation holds the key to his salvation. To save him, you must unlock its dormant potential.” Artemis stepped closer, her presence both commanding and reassuring.

“To contain the stone's magic, you need a sacred space. That’s not possible here, but you can cast a circle and consecrate it.”

I nodded. “How do I do that? Never mind. Can you make the nurse outside go away so Kaiya can get inside?”

The goddess inclined her head as I pulled my phone from my bag and texted Kaiya. She banged through the door a couple of seconds later without responding. “Oh, shit. You didn’t say the goddess was here.”

Amelie and Maisy were with her and stood in the doorway, gaping at Artemis. I waved them inside. “Shut the door. We have to act fast to save your father.” My girls snapped to attention and hurried around to the other side of the bed. “You can have your freak-out later. We have to cast a circle now.
